We have all seen crazy headlines such as “Bryce Harper Wins the World Series on MLB The Show” or “Donald Trump uses Pokemon to help with California Fires”. Do they sound ridiculous?? Well they should, because that is the point.
These are headlines you would see from parody/fake news sites such as The Onion and the Babylon Bee, in which a website takes real people or real events and turns them into to something absolutely absurd and unbelievable. These sites have been appearing more and more all over social media news feeds. It’s getting harder and harder to stick out in this genre as the competition grows, in addition to the ACTUAL ridiculous news stories that exist.
A local man in China Grove is going to make that effort.
David Knight, 35, is a husband and father of one who works an everyday 8-5 like everybody else, pays bills, loves his family, etc. Now he thinks he can be funny and write fake articles.
“I got the idea around Halloween of this year” he said. “I kept getting funny stories in my head and I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I figure why not? What can it hurt?”
Knight created a website on Word Press known as “The Nightly Angle” after discussing the idea with a couple of close friends. This was not the name he wanted though.
“I was hoping to get the “TheKnightlyNews”, but the domain would have been over $2,000. Yeah fuck that. I can’t even pay for the one year business membership through WordPress as of today!”
Knight assured everyone that his family wasn’t in trouble, he is just between paychecks.
“We are good….we have food, shelter, and running vehicles. Life could be much worse.”
His plans are to write on the site whenever there is little or nothing for him to talk about on Youtube or he has time to himself alone at the house. He also has a Youtube channel that is self titled at a little over 6,000 subscribers that talks baseball, bowling, and other news events. The channel gets most of it’s views on Zit popping videos.
“Everyone thinks the zit videos are gross. My wife and I would watch them and cringe and I thought why not try reacting to them? Definitely an audience for that kind of thing.”
Does he think the parody site can compete?? Can he do something like this in combination with something else as a full time living??
“I don’t know….probably not” He says laughing. “I see it as a way to goof off and have fun. Again, what can it hurt?”
