There is some big news coming out of Mexico today that if upheld could lead to some serious changes in how the Cartel does business and what they choose to traffic going forward.
A Mexico City Judge ruled in favor of two individuals to use cocaine recreationally. People in the country are calling it a “historic step” for the country’s War on Drugs. The judge ruled in favor to possess, transport, and use the substance, but not to sell. The court ordered their national health regulator to help with the usage of the drug and to portion into “proper doses”.
The ruling still has to be upheld and it only applies to the two people in question, but sources say that people in the Cartel are already fearing that this can lead to more legalization of recreational use, putting a possible snag in their very long term and lucrative business of drug trafficking.
As a back up measure, sources say that the Cartel is planning to import something that can make them major profits: Bottled Water.
“Everyone always say to not drink the water when they come Mexico”, said one anonymous contact. “There are many reasons for that. It is common for people to drink beer more than it is water. People get very sick.”
These sources continued to say that bringing in certain types of bottled water could be very lucrative, especially among tourists spots.
“Americans take for granted how cheap and abundant bottled water is in the U.S., but here it can be difficult to come by. This could lead to really high revenues for the Cartel.”
The idea is that they could buy the water in the U.S really cheap, bring it into Mexico, and jack up the price to tourists.
“Tourists are stupid”, said one local vendor, who’s main business is during tourist season. “They will spend way too much! They just don’t know it because our currency is so worthless! We make a killing from them!”
All this being said, we shouldn’t plan on the Cartel starting this anytime soon.
“The Cartel makes millions upon millions on drugs and other illegal activities. It would take a lot for the bottled water plan to be put into action. Mexico is nowhere near full legalization of a substance like cocaine. They will be fine for awhile.”
Time will tell if this decision leads to more drug legalization across the country, but one must ask themselves: If they travel to Mexico would they rather go thirsty or pay to get the Cartel’s rich??
